Read for meaning

Find the evidence behind your answer

Practise the decisions that matter in everyday Finnish messages, notices and opinions.

Understand why a choice works

You can recognise every word in an answer and still choose the wrong one. A deadline may belong to a different action. A request may still need approval. A writer may describe a proposal rather than something already decided.

These six walkthroughs help you notice those differences. Read an original Finnish text, try a question and use the exact supporting sentences to check your reasoning. Then read another text and apply the same skill with different details.

Everything is available without an account. The exercises are independent study material written for YKI Test Prep, with prepared answer explanations for independent practice. They do not produce an exam level or add XP to your practice history.

  1. Appointment message · Obligations and exceptions

Do you need to confirm the appointment?

Separate keeping an appointment from requesting a change. Notice what a negative necessity expression actually asks you to do.

  2. Housing notice · Time and practical action

Read a notice about a water interruption

Work out what happens before, during and after an interruption. Keep preparation instructions separate from estimated finishing times.

  3. Workplace message · Conditions and sequence

When is a work shift change agreed?

Distinguish a proposal, a colleague's agreement and the approval that makes an arrangement final.

  4. Course email · Status and deadlines

Is the course place yours yet?

Read the difference between a waiting list, an offer and a confirmed place. Track who must act next.

  5. Collection instructions · Requirements and exceptions

    Who can collect the parcel?

Combine a general instruction with an exception for another person. Avoid treating one document as a substitute for everything else.

  6. Reader opinion · Viewpoint and supporting reasons

Separate an opinion from a current fact

Recognise a proposal, the reasons supporting it and the writer's acknowledgement of a drawback.

A useful way to practise

  1. Read the Finnish before opening its English meaning.
  2. Choose an answer and explain which part of the text supports it.
  3. If the choice does not fit, read the feedback and compare it with the supporting sentences.
  4. Try the second situation before opening its answer guide. Ask whether you used the reasoning or simply remembered a previous option.

Use the linked Grammar lesson when a particular expression causes difficulty. After a walkthrough, return to reading practice to work with less guidance. The main practice bank has its own guest preview limits.
