Expert strategies to maximise your YKI score

The study strategy bank is route-based too, with targeted advice for reading, writing, listening, vocabulary, and general exam technique.

General Strategy: These are the exact quick-win strategies now grouped into a cleaner route so each practice section can link back to focused study advice.

No negative marking — always answer

In YKI there is NO penalty for wrong answers. Always answer every single question. An empty answer is guaranteed zero, but a guess has a chance. Never leave anything blank.

Read the question BEFORE the passage

Before reading the text, read the question first. You'll know exactly what to look for and won't waste time reading everything equally. This single habit can save you minutes.

Find semantic matches, not just exact words

The correct answer often uses synonyms or related terms from the same field as the passage — not necessarily the exact same words. Look for meaning matches, not word matches.

Don't overthink — move on

Your first instinct is often right after reading carefully. If you're stuck after 30 seconds, mark your best guess and move on. Return at the end if time allows. Overthinking causes more wrong answers.

Eliminate obviously wrong answers first

Even if you're unsure of the correct answer, cross out the obviously wrong ones. Getting from 4 options to 2 options gives you 50/50 odds, which is much better than guessing from 4.

Manage your time actively

Keep an eye on the clock. Divide your time roughly equally across questions. Don't spend 5 minutes on one question while others are left unanswered. A fast reasonable guess beats no answer.

Understand context, don't translate word by word

Stop trying to translate every word. Focus on understanding the main meaning and the context. Finnish is highly context-dependent — a word's meaning shifts depending on context.

Speaking: silence is your enemy

In the speaking test, keep talking even if your Finnish is imperfect. Use fillers: 'öö', 'siis', 'no niin', 'tota'. Fluent silence is far worse than slightly incorrect speech.

Writing: structure wins marks

A clear structure scores better than complex confused writing. Use: introduction → main points → conclusion. Even simple correct Finnish beats complex confusing text.

Listening: key words carry meaning

In listening comprehension, you don't need every word — just the key ones. Focus on nouns, numbers, names, places and action verbs. These carry the core meaning you need to answer.

Numbers and dates — always notice them

Questions about times, prices, dates and quantities are very common in YKI reading. When reading, always highlight numbers and time expressions mentally — these are often the exact answer.

Watch for negatives in Finnish

Finnish negatives can change everything: 'ei', 'eikä', 'ei koskaan', 'ei kuitenkaan', 'ei … mikään'. Exam questions often test whether you spotted a negative that changes the meaning.
