Building Finnish vocabulary for the YKI exam
Vocabulary is the foundation under all four YKI subtests. You cannot understand a reading passage, follow a recording, write an email, or answer a speaking prompt without the words for the situation. The YKI exam is built around recurring real life themes, so vocabulary study is most effective when it follows those same themes rather than random word lists.

The themes the YKI exam keeps returning to
Official YKI topic areas include personal background, home and housing, shops and services, culture and free time, travel, health and wellbeing, work and employment, the environment, and society and public services. Almost every text, recording, and writing task fits one of these.
Studying by theme means you learn the words that actually occur together, such as a doctor's appointment set, a renting a flat set, or a job interview set. You can then recall them together under exam pressure instead of recognising them only in isolation.

Flashcards are best for first exposure and spaced review. See the Finnish, recall the meaning and an example sentence, then flip to check. The example sentences matter because Finnish meaning shifts with case endings and context.

How many Finnish words do I need for the YKI test?
There is no fixed number, but a solid intermediate (B1) vocabulary of a few thousand common words across the official themes covers the large majority of exam material. Depth on common topics beats breadth on rare ones.
What is the fastest way to memorise Finnish vocabulary?
Spaced repetition with example sentences. Review words just before you would forget them, always in a sentence, and prioritise the themes the exam favours. Active recall through games and writing locks them in far better than reading lists over and over.
Should I learn words with their case endings?
Learn the basic dictionary form first, then the most useful forms in context, for example a verb with the cases it governs, or a noun in the partitive. The example sentences on the flashcards are there to show those forms in use.
