Housing notice

Read a notice about a water interruption

Work out what happens before, during and after an interruption. Keep preparation instructions separate from estimated finishing times.

Original fictional practice by YKI Test Prep. Published . Work independently using the explanations provided.

Read the first situation

A notice appears in your building. You will be home that morning. Find the action you need to take before the work begins, rather than choosing an answer because it repeats a time from the notice.

Housing notice

Talossa tehdään putkitöitä keskiviikkona.

Vedenjakelu keskeytetään kello 10, ja työn arvioidaan valmistuvan kello 13.

Varaa tarvitsemasi juomavesi astioihin ennen katkon alkua.

Katko voi päättyä aiemmin. Ilmoitamme erikseen, jos työ jatkuu suunniteltua pidempään.

English meaning of the text

Pipe work will be carried out in the building on Wednesday.

The water supply will be interrupted at 10, and the work is estimated to finish at 13.

Put the drinking water you need into containers before the interruption begins.

The interruption may end earlier. We will inform residents separately if the work lasts longer than planned.

Choose the answer supported by the text

Mitä asukkaan kannattaa tehdä ennen kello kymmentä?

English meaning of the question and choices

What should a resident do before ten?

  1. Wait for a notice that the work is finished.
  2. Fill containers only at 13.
  3. Prepare drinking water in containers.
Answer and reasoning for every choice

Supported answer: Ottaa juomavettä valmiiksi astioihin.

Make a small timeline: prepare water, interruption starts at ten, work is expected to finish at thirteen. The question asks about the first stage. An estimated end time is not a guarantee that water returns at exactly that moment.

Evidence in the text

Vedenjakelu keskeytetään kello 10, ja työn arvioidaan valmistuvan kello 13.

The water supply will be interrupted at 10, and the work is estimated to finish at 13.

Varaa tarvitsemasi juomavesi astioihin ennen katkon alkua.

Put the drinking water you need into containers before the interruption begins.

Why the alternatives differ

Odottaa ilmoitusta työn valmistumisesta.
This would not prepare water before the interruption. The separate notice mentioned in the text concerns work taking longer than planned.
Täyttää astiat vasta kello 13.
Thirteen is an estimated finishing time. The instruction is to prepare water before the interruption, which begins at ten.
Ottaa juomavettä valmiiksi astioihin.
This restates varaa tarvitsemasi juomavesi astioihin. Preparing it beforehand is the action relevant to the question.

Understand where something goes. Astioihin expresses a destination. The same direction pattern appears in many practical instructions.

Notice the language

ennen katkon alkua

before the start of the interruption

Ennen puts the preparation earlier than the event. The word alkua identifies the beginning, not the end.

työn arvioidaan valmistuvan

the work is estimated to finish

An estimate expresses an expected time. It leaves room for the earlier or later finish described in the next sentence.

Read a change to a collection time

A different notice concerns a delivery desk. Use the sequence of events rather than the largest number in the text.

A different situation

Toimiston noutopiste avataan perjantaina poikkeuksellisesti vasta kello 12.

Tavaroita ei voi hakea aamulla, vaikka toimiston muut palvelut ovat avoinna kello 9 alkaen.

Noutopiste suljetaan tavalliseen tapaan kello 16.

English meaning of the text

On Friday, the office collection point will exceptionally open only at 12.

Items cannot be collected in the morning, although the office's other services are open from 9.

The collection point closes at 16 as usual.

Choose the answer supported by the text

Milloin tavaran voi hakea perjantaina?

English meaning of the question and choices

When can the item be collected on Friday?

  1. As soon as the office opens in the morning.
  2. After midday before closing.
  3. Only after sixteen.
Answer and reasoning for every choice

Supported answer: Puolenpäivän jälkeen ennen sulkemista.

A building can be open while a particular service is closed. Match the hours to the named service you want to use.

Why the alternatives differ

Heti toimiston avauduttua aamulla.
The collection point has a separate opening time. The text explicitly rules out morning collection.
Puolenpäivän jälkeen ennen sulkemista.
The collection point opens at twelve and closes at sixteen. These are the hours relevant to collecting the item.
Ainoastaan kello 16 jälkeen.
Sixteen is the closing time, not the start of collection.

Read vaikka as a contrast. Vaikka lets two facts coexist: the office is open, yet collection is unavailable.

Explain it yourself

Tell a neighbour when to prepare the water and explain why the finishing time is not certain. Your draft stays on this page until you leave or reload. It is not submitted or automatically graded.

Compare a possible explanation

Vesi kannattaa ottaa valmiiksi ennen kello kymmentä. Kello 13 on arvio, ja työ voi valmistua aiemmin tai myöhemmin.

It is worth preparing the water before ten. Thirteen is an estimate, and the work may finish earlier or later.

A useful answer combines an action and the reason for caution about the time. It does not turn an estimate into a promise.

Your wording can differ from the example. Check whether it keeps the same meaning and uses evidence from the text. The exercise does not automatically assess your writing.
