Appointment message

Do you need to confirm the appointment?

Separate keeping an appointment from requesting a change. Notice what a negative necessity expression actually asks you to do.

Read the first situation

You receive this message after booking a routine appointment. Your task is to decide what to do if the time already suits you. Read for the required action before checking individual unfamiliar words.

Appointment message

Sinulle on varattu aika torstaiksi kello 9.30.

Jos aika sopii, sinun ei tarvitse vastata tähän viestiin.

Ota yhteyttä ajanvaraukseen viimeistään tiistaina, jos haluat vaihtaa ajan.

Vastaamatta jättäminen ei peru varausta.

Not replying does not cancel the booking.

Choose the answer supported by the text

Aika sopii sinulle. Mitä sinun pitää tehdä?

English meaning of the question and choices

The appointment time suits you. What do you have to do?

  1. Confirm the appointment by Tuesday.
  2. You do not need to send a reply.
  3. Make a new booking on Thursday.
Answer and reasoning for every choice

Supported answer: Vastausta ei tarvitse lähettää.

Start with your situation: you can attend. That selects the condition jos aika sopii. Inside that condition, ei tarvitse means there is no obligation. The Tuesday instruction applies to a different situation, wanting a change.

Evidence in the text

Jos aika sopii, sinun ei tarvitse vastata tähän viestiin.

If the time suits you, you do not need to reply to this message.

Vastaamatta jättäminen ei peru varausta.

Not replying does not cancel the booking.

Why the alternatives differ

Vahvistaa aika tiistaihin mennessä.
Tuesday is the deadline for requesting a change. The message does not make it a confirmation deadline for someone keeping the appointment.
Vastausta ei tarvitse lähettää.
The second sentence removes the need to reply when the time suits you. The final sentence confirms that silence does not cancel the booking.
Tehdä uusi varaus torstaina.
An appointment already exists. Thursday is its scheduled day, not a day on which you must book again.

Understand ei tarvitse. Review how Finnish distinguishes an obligation from something that is not necessary.

Notice the language

sinun ei tarvitse vastata

you do not need to reply

The negative removes an obligation. It does not mean that replying is forbidden.

viimeistään tiistaina

by Tuesday at the latest

Attach the deadline to the action it belongs to. Here that action is contacting the service to change the time.

Try a different confirmation rule

This time you have a place at a small event. The wording changes the required action, so do not reuse the first answer automatically.

A different situation

Olemme varanneet sinulle paikan lauantain työpajaan.

Vahvista osallistumisesi vastaamalla tähän viestiin keskiviikkoon mennessä.

Jos emme saa vastausta, tarjoamme paikan toiselle osallistujalle.

English meaning of the text

We have reserved you a place at Saturday's workshop.

Confirm your participation by replying to this message by Wednesday.

If we do not receive a reply, we will offer the place to another participant.

Choose the answer supported by the text

Haluat osallistua. Mitä teet?

English meaning of the question and choices

You want to take part. What do you do?

  1. I send confirmation by Wednesday.
  2. I wait until Saturday without replying.
  3. I always ask for a new time.
Answer and reasoning for every choice

Supported answer: Lähetän vahvistuksen keskiviikkoon mennessä.

The first message said ei tarvitse vastata. This one says vahvista and gives a consequence for silence. Similar looking messages can require opposite actions.

Evidence in the text

Vahvista osallistumisesi vastaamalla tähän viestiin keskiviikkoon mennessä.

Confirm your participation by replying to this message by Wednesday.

Jos emme saa vastausta, tarjoamme paikan toiselle osallistujalle.

If we do not receive a reply, we will offer the place to another participant.

Why the alternatives differ

Lähetän vahvistuksen keskiviikkoon mennessä.
This message explicitly requires a reply to keep the place. The action follows from vahvista osallistumisesi.
Odotan lauantaihin vastaamatta.
The final sentence explains that a place can be offered to someone else when there is no reply.
Pyydän aina uuden ajan.
Nothing says that you must change the time. The request concerns confirmation of participation.

Follow a condition and its result. Use the condition to decide which instruction applies to the reader.

Explain it yourself

Check your own response
Compare a possible explanation

Ensimmäistä aikaa ei tarvitse vahvistaa. Työpajaan osallistuminen täytyy vahvistaa keskiviikkoon mennessä.

The first appointment does not need confirmation. Participation in the workshop must be confirmed by Wednesday.

The explanation compares the actual instructions. It does not rely on the shared topic of bookings or the presence of a weekday.

Your wording can differ from the example. Check whether it keeps the same meaning and uses evidence from the text. The exercise does not automatically assess your writing.
