YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto, the National Certificate of Language Proficiency) is Finland's official language skills certificate. The Finnish test is the one most learners take for permanent residency and citizenship purposes. The three levels are basic (perustaso, grades 1 to 2, CEFR A1 to A2), intermediate (keskitaso, grades 3 to 4, CEFR B1 to B2), and advanced (ylin taso, grades 5 to 6, CEFR C1 to C2). You register for one level.
Within that level you complete four subtests: reading comprehension (tekstin ymmärtäminen), writing (kirjoittaminen), listening comprehension (puheen ymmärtäminen), and speaking (puhuminen). Each is graded separately, so you can be stronger in some skills than others and still hold a valid certificate.
