Use grammar in messages, complaints and opinions

Work through complete original texts, see why each grammar choice helps the reader and plan your own practical response.

Try the practice questions

By YKI Test Prep. Published and updated . Original study material, independent of the official YKI test.

What you will learn

  • Connect grammar choices to a real writing purpose.
  • Describe a problem and request a concrete solution.
  • Plan an opinion with a reason, example and balanced conclusion.

Plan what the reader needs before choosing grammar

A practical text begins with a purpose: change an appointment, report a problem or explain a preference. Identify the recipient and list the details they need. Then choose sentence frames that carry those details. Grammar helps you make the message precise; it is not a separate display of everything you have memorised.

For an appointment change, a useful sequence is identification, problem, alternative and request for confirmation. For a complaint, use the original event, the current problem and the remedy you want. For an opinion, use a claim, support and a conclusion. These are flexible planning tools, not official YKI templates or scoring rules.

Minulla on varaus torstaille, mutta en pääse silloin.

I have a reservation for Thursday, but I cannot make it then.

Possession identifies the booking; mutta introduces the problem.

Voisitteko vahvistaa uuden ajan sähköpostitse?

Could you confirm the new time by email?

The final request tells the recipient exactly what response is useful.

A complaint: connect the purchase, the problem and the remedy

An understandable complaint can be calm and direct. State what you bought and when, describe the fault in the present, and request a remedy. The imperfect suits the past purchase; the present negative suits a current malfunction; a conditional can introduce the requested solution.

Original model: Hei! Ostin teiltä kahvinkeittimen viime viikolla. Laite ei toimi, vaikka olen noudattanut käyttöohjetta. Haluaisin vaihtaa sen toimivaan laitteeseen. Voisitteko kertoa, miten vaihto onnistuu? Kiitos avusta. The model is a language exercise, not a statement of consumer-law entitlements.

Ostin teiltä kahvinkeittimen viime viikolla.

I bought a coffee maker from you last week.

Ostin places the purchase in a finished past period; kahvinkeittimen is its total object.

Laite ei toimi, vaikka olen noudattanut käyttöohjetta.

The appliance does not work, although I have followed the instructions.

Ei toimi describes the current fault. Vaikka introduces the unexpected contrast.

Voisitteko kertoa, miten vaihto onnistuu?

Could you tell me how an exchange can be arranged?

The conditional introduces an actionable request; miten begins an indirect question.

An opinion: make the grammar support your reasoning

An opinion becomes easier to follow when each sentence has a job. State your position first. Use koska to explain it, an example to make it concrete and vaikka to acknowledge a limitation. Finish with a choice that follows from your reasons rather than introducing a completely new topic.

Original model: Mielestäni kirjaston pitäisi olla auki sunnuntaisin. Monet ihmiset ovat töissä arkisin, joten he tarvitsevat rauhallisen opiskelupaikan viikonloppuna. Esimerkiksi minä voisin tehdä siellä kurssitehtäviä. Vaikka pidemmät aukioloajat vaativat järjestelyjä, sunnuntain aukiolo olisi hyödyllinen palvelu. This is a supported preference, not a claim about a particular library's actual opening hours.

Kirjaston pitäisi olla auki sunnuntaisin.

The library should be open on Sundays.

Pitäisi expresses a proposal rather than reporting an existing timetable.

Monet ihmiset ovat töissä arkisin, joten he tarvitsevat rauhallisen opiskelupaikan viikonloppuna.

Many people work on weekdays, so they need a quiet place to study at the weekend.

Joten makes the writer's consequence explicit.

Esimerkiksi minä voisin tehdä siellä kurssitehtäviä.

For example, I could do course assignments there.

Voisin presents a concrete possible use rather than another abstract claim.

Review task completion and language in separate passes

First read as the recipient. Is the purpose clear? Are the relevant details present? Is there a question or conclusion to respond to? Next read for language: verb person, time viewpoint, negative forms, object case and agreement. This makes editing manageable and prevents a long grammar check from hiding an unanswered task.

For speaking practice, cover the model and describe the same situation aloud using your own details. If you pause, simplify the next sentence instead of abandoning the message. For writing practice, compare the function of your sentences with the model, not just whether you used identical words. There are many acceptable ways to complete the same communication task.

Ostin tuotteen eilen. Nyt se ei toimi.

I bought the product yesterday. Now it does not work.

Two clear sentences can communicate the time contrast effectively.

Haluaisin uuden ajan. Sopisiko keskiviikko?

I would like a new appointment. Would Wednesday suit?

A short request plus a specific alternative can be enough.

Mistakes and corrections

Before: Complaint ending: Tämä on huono. Hei hei.

After: Complaint ending: Haluaisin vaihtaa laitteen. Voisitteko kertoa, miten vaihto onnistuu?

The revision specifies the requested remedy and gives the recipient a question to answer.

Before: Ostin laitteen eilen. Se ei toimii.

After: Ostin laitteen eilen. Se ei toimi.

After ei, use the negative present form toimi, without the third-person ending.

Everyday dialogue

Customer

Hei! Ostin tämän laitteen eilen, mutta se ei toimi.

Hello! I bought this appliance yesterday, but it does not work.

Staff

Onko sinulla kuitti mukana?

Do you have the receipt with you?

Customer

On. Haluaisin vaihtaa laitteen.

Yes. I would like to exchange the appliance.

Staff

Selvä. Katsotaan ensin, mikä laitteessa on vikana.

All right. Let's first see what is wrong with the appliance.

The customer identifies the past purchase, describes the current problem and states the desired action. The staff member's question uses the possession frame to ask for a relevant detail.

Practise and understand your answers

Choose an answer to see feedback. You can try again. The answer guide below also works without interactive practice.

1. Correct a sentence

Correct the current problem statement: Laite ei toimii.

2. Choose a response

Which closing gives a shop an actionable request?

3. Choose the meaning

Kirjaston pitäisi olla auki sunnuntaisin. What is the writer doing?

4. Choose a response

Which sentence gives a concrete example supporting Sunday opening?

0 of 4 correct; 0 questions attempted.

Explained answer guide

Try the questions before opening the explanations. Each alternative is explained so you can identify the pattern you need to revisit.

1. Correct the current problem statement: Laite ei toimii.

Answer: Laite ei toimi.

  • Laite ei toimia.: The dictionary form toimia is not the present connegative.
  • Laite ei toimi.: Ei is followed by toimi in the negative present.
  • Laite en toimi.: En is first-person negative; laite needs ei.
2. Which closing gives a shop an actionable request?

Answer: Haluaisin vaihtaa laitteen. Miten vaihto onnistuu?

  • Ostin tämän viime viikolla.: This is useful background, but it does not say what response you want.
  • Laite on valkoinen.: Colour alone does not identify the requested remedy.
  • Haluaisin vaihtaa laitteen. Miten vaihto onnistuu?: This states the desired action and asks how to arrange it.
3. Kirjaston pitäisi olla auki sunnuntaisin. What is the writer doing?

Answer: Proposing that the library should open on Sundays.

  • Proposing that the library should open on Sundays.: Pitäisi presents a recommendation or desired arrangement.
  • Confirming its actual Sunday timetable.: The conditional necessity form is not a factual timetable confirmation.
  • Reporting a visit last Sunday.: There is no past visit in this sentence.
4. Which sentence gives a concrete example supporting Sunday opening?

Answer: Voisin tehdä siellä kurssitehtäviä viikonloppuna.

  • Sunnuntai on viikonpäivä.: This is a definition, not a reason the service would help.
  • Voisin tehdä siellä kurssitehtäviä viikonloppuna.: The writer gives a specific way the service could be used.
  • Kirjasto on kirjasto.: This repeats the topic without developing the argument.

Use it yourself

Write a message to a course organiser. You missed yesterday's lesson, want the homework and need to confirm the next meeting place. Explain the reason briefly and make both requests clear. Your draft stays on this page until you leave or reload. It is not submitted or automatically graded.

Check your own response
Compare a model response and its grammar
Hei! En päässyt eilen kurssille, koska olin töissä. Voisitko lähettää minulle kotitehtävät? Haluaisin myös varmistaa, missä seuraava tunti pidetään. Onko se samassa luokassa kuin viime viikolla? Kiitos avusta!
English translation

Hello! I could not attend the course yesterday because I was at work. Could you send me the homework? I would also like to confirm where the next lesson is held. Is it in the same classroom as last week? Thank you for your help!

Why these forms work

  • En päässyt is a negative imperfect explaining the missed event.
  • Koska gives a brief reason.
  • Voisitko lähettää requests the homework.
  • Missä seuraava tunti pidetään asks about a location using the passive.
  • Samassa luokassa shows adjective-like agreement in the location phrase.

For speaking practice, cover the model and explain the same situation aloud with your own details. Continue with writing practice or speaking practice, which have their own guest preview limits.

Check the pattern in a new situation

A complete practical message connects a situation with a wanted response. Each sentence should help the recipient identify the event, understand the problem or act on the request. Grammar choices make those relationships precise.

A useful decision sequence

  1. Identify the arrangement or purchase with enough detail for the recipient to recognise it.
  2. Separate a past event from a current problem by choosing the time viewpoint deliberately.
  3. Finish with an actionable request or a conclusion supported by the reasons you gave.
Varasin ajan maanantaina, mutta en saanut vahvistusta.

I booked an appointment on Monday, but I did not receive confirmation.

The affirmative and negative imperfect describe the booking and what did not follow it.

Voisitteko tarkistaa, onko varaukseni voimassa?

Could you check whether my reservation is valid?

The request tells the recipient what to investigate and asks about the current situation.

One more situation to try

Write to a course office about a missing confirmation. Say when you registered, describe what you have not received and ask the office to check your registration.

See an example and the reasoning

Hei! Ilmoittauduin kurssille tiistaina, mutta en ole saanut vahvistusta. Voisitteko tarkistaa, onko ilmoittautumiseni tullut perille? Kiitos avusta!

Hello! I registered for the course on Tuesday, but I have not received confirmation. Could you check whether my registration has arrived? Thank you for your help!

How the grammar supports the message

Ilmoittauduin anchors the completed registration in the past. En ole saanut describes the missing confirmation up to now. Voisitteko tarkistaa makes the requested action clear, and the indirect question identifies what needs checking.

Lessons and practice are open to everyone.
