Find and fix common grammar mistakes

Use an editing method for agreement, number phrases, verb complements and time expressions, with reasons for each correction.

Try the practice questions

By YKI Test Prep. Published and updated . Original study material, independent of the official YKI test.

What you will learn

  • Edit one grammar category at a time.
  • Distinguish a formation error from a wrong sentence pattern.
  • Build a personal correction list you can reuse.

Check meaning before individual endings

A useful correction starts by asking what the writer means. If a message says olen kauppaan, the problem is not just a missing letter: the sentence mixes being somewhere with going somewhere. Choose olen kaupassa for location or menen kauppaan for a destination. Some corrections therefore require a meaning decision before there is one best form.

Use three passes. First check that the task is answered and the reader can follow the time and people. Next check the finite verbs and their complements. Finally check noun endings, agreement and spelling. Trying to fix everything at once makes it easy to miss the main communication problem.

Olen kaupassa. Menen kauppaan.

I am in the shop. I am going to the shop.

Choose the frame that matches your intended meaning.

En pääse maanantaina. Voisimmeko tavata tiistaina?

I cannot make it on Monday. Could we meet on Tuesday?

The message solves the practical problem before adding complexity.

Check agreement inside a noun phrase

An adjective describing a noun normally agrees with it in case and number: uudessa talossa, vanhoissa taloissa. The adjective and noun may have different-looking stems even when their grammatical case is the same. Do not check agreement by looking for identical letter sequences.

Number phrases need separate attention. In a basic counting expression after two or more, use singular partitive for the counted noun and its describing adjective: kaksi uutta kirjaa. In an inflected location phrase, both the number and the noun phrase can change: kahdessa uudessa talossa. The basic counting rule is not a command to keep the noun partitive in every sentence containing a number.

Asun uudessa talossa.

I live in a new building.

Uudessa and talossa are both singular inessive.

Ostin kaksi uutta kirjaa.

I bought two new books.

Uutta kirjaa is singular partitive after the basic cardinal kaksi.

Kävin kahdessa uudessa kaupassa.

I visited two new shops.

The location construction inflects the whole number phrase.

Learn a verb together with what follows it

Some errors come from transferring an English preposition or sentence pattern directly into Finnish. Pitää in the meaning like uses a -sta or -stä complement: pidän musiikista. Osallistua uses -lle: osallistun kurssille. Harjoitella can be followed by an activity noun: harjoittelen puhumista.

Keep a personal list of short verb frames rather than isolated infinitives. Add one example sentence and a contrast you often confuse. The goal is not to learn every possible complement at once. Repeatedly using five useful patterns accurately can improve your messages more than collecting fifty unexplained verb names.

Pidän tästä kurssista.

I like this course.

Pitää meaning like uses the elative complement.

Osallistun suomen kurssille.

I am participating in a Finnish course.

Learn osallistua together with the -lle form.

Harjoittelen puhumista joka päivä.

I practise speaking every day.

The activity is expressed with the -minen noun in the partitive.

Turn a correction into something you can use again

Time expressions also have established frames: maanantaina for on Monday, ensi viikolla for next week and kaksi tuntia for a duration of two hours in common activity sentences. Avoid adding a case ending only because the English expression contains a preposition. Learn the full Finnish phrase with a sentence.

For each recurring mistake, record the original, a correction and a short reason in your own words. Then write a new sentence with different vocabulary. Copying a correction once tests memory of that example; producing another sentence tests whether you can use the pattern. Recheck your personal list before the next writing task.

Kurssi alkaa maanantaina.

The course begins on Monday.

The day expression uses -na here.

Opiskelin kaksi tuntia.

I studied for two hours.

This duration uses a basic number phrase; no English for needs a separate Finnish word.

Mistakes and corrections

Before: Asun uusi talossa.

After: Asun uudessa talossa.

The describing adjective agrees with the noun in case.

Before: Minulla on kaksi kirjat.

After: Minulla on kaksi kirjaa.

The counted noun after basic cardinal kaksi is singular partitive.

Before: Pidän tämä kurssi.

After: Pidän tästä kurssista.

Pitää meaning like takes the elative; tämä and kurssi both change.

Everyday dialogue

Learner

Kirjoitin: Minulla on kaksi kirjat. Mikä siinä on väärin?

I wrote: I have two books [with an incorrect noun form]. What is wrong with it?

Partner

Kirjoita kaksi kirjaa. Lukusanan jälkeen käytetään tässä partitiivia.

Write kaksi kirjaa. After the number, the partitive is used here.

Learner

Entä kaksi uutta kirjaa?

What about two new books?

Partner

Se on oikein. Myös adjektiivi on partitiivissa.

That is correct. The adjective is also in the partitive.

The first line deliberately quotes an error for correction. The follow-up changes the example by adding an adjective, which checks whether the learner understands the phrase pattern.

Practise and understand your answers

Choose an answer to see feedback. You can try again. The answer guide below also works without interactive practice.

Explained answer guide

Try the questions before opening the explanations. Each alternative is explained so you can identify the pattern you need to revisit.

1. Asun ___ talossa. Choose the form of uusi.

Answer: uudessa

  • uusi: The dictionary form does not agree with talossa.
  • uuden: Uuden is genitive, while talossa is inessive.
  • uudessa: Uudessa agrees with singular inessive talossa.
2. Correct: Minulla on kaksi uudet kirjat.

Answer: Minulla on kaksi uutta kirjaa.

  • Minulla on kaksi uusia kirjoja.: The basic counting phrase requires singular partitive here, not plural partitive.
  • Minulla on kaksi uutta kirjaa.: Both adjective and noun use singular partitive after basic kaksi.
  • Minulla on kaksi uusi kirja.: Dictionary singular forms do not fit this two-item counting phrase.
3. Pidän ___. Say: I like this course.

Answer: tästä kurssista

  • tästä kurssista: Pitää meaning like takes an elative complement; both words agree.
  • tämä kurssi: These dictionary forms do not fit the pitää complement.
  • tälle kurssille: The -lle pattern fits osallistua, not pitää meaning like.
4. Kurssi alkaa ___. Say: on Monday.

Answer: maanantaina

  • maanantai: The dictionary day name does not form this time expression.
  • maanantain: The genitive is not the required on-Monday expression here.
  • maanantaina: Maanantaina is the ordinary expression for on Monday.

Use it yourself

Write a short course description with one location, a day, a number phrase and something you like. Then check each category separately. Your draft stays on this page until you leave or reload. It is not submitted or automatically graded.

Kurssi alkaa maanantaina. Opiskelemme uudessa rakennuksessa. Ryhmässä on kaksi uutta opiskelijaa. Pidän kurssista, koska harjoittelemme puhumista joka päivä.
English translation

The course starts on Monday. We study in a new building. There are two new students in the group. I like the course because we practise speaking every day.

Why these forms work

  • Maanantaina is a day expression.
  • Uudessa rakennuksessa shows case agreement.
  • Kaksi uutta opiskelijaa shows the basic counting pattern.
  • Pidän kurssista and harjoittelemme puhumista use learned verb frames.

For speaking practice, cover the model and explain the same situation aloud with your own details. Continue with writing practice or speaking practice, which have their own guest preview limits.

Check the pattern in a new situation

Edit in separate passes so each correction has a reason. Check the purpose of the message first, verb patterns second, and noun phrases last. A corrected example becomes more useful when you can produce another sentence using the same pattern.

A useful decision sequence

  1. Read the message as its recipient: is the event, time and requested action clear?
  2. Check the finite verbs and their complements, including negatives and two-verb patterns.
  3. Check adjective agreement and quantity phrases separately instead of giving all quantity words the same rule.
Kurssilla on monta uutta opiskelijaa.

There are many new students on the course.

Monta takes a singular partitive noun phrase here: uutta opiskelijaa.

Kurssilla on paljon uusia opiskelijoita.

There are a lot of new students on the course.

Paljon with plural countable students takes plural partitive: uusia opiskelijoita.

One more situation to try

Correct both phrases and explain the difference: kaksi uudet kirjat; paljon uusi opiskelijat. Do not use the same noun form after every quantity expression.

See an example and the reasoning

kaksi uutta kirjaa; paljon uusia opiskelijoita

two new books; a lot of new students

How the grammar supports the message

The basic cardinal kaksi takes a singular partitive noun phrase. Paljon with an unspecified number of countable students takes plural partitive. Both the adjective and the noun need the appropriate form, so checking only the noun would leave part of the error unfixed.

Lessons and practice are open to everyone.
