How to prepare for the YKI speaking test
Intermediate Finnish speaking practice includes responding to recorded prompts in a language laboratory. Speaking arrangements differ by test level: basic Finnish includes an interview, and advanced tests include an interview alongside the laboratory tasks. Follow your test centre’s instructions for the format and response times.
Tasks include quick situational responses (greeting, apologizing, ordering), roleplay conversations where you take turns with the recorded speaker, and short narrative or opinion talks on general topics.
Handling the language laboratory environment
The language lab can feel intense because other test-takers in the room speak at the same time. Focus entirely on your headphones and keep your voice clear and steady. Practise speaking clearly without shouting; follow the equipment instructions at your test centre.
Do not stop speaking if you make a mistake. Self-correction is natural and examiners welcome it: simply rephrase the sentence and keep going. Leaving long silences hurts your fluency score far more than a minor case ending error.
Useful conversational fillers to buy thinking time
When you need a moment to collect your thoughts before answering, use natural Finnish conversational phrases such as 'No niin', 'Totta puhuen', 'Minun mielestäni', or 'Mielenkiintoinen kysymys'.
These fillers sound natural, demonstrate communicative competence, and keep your answer flowing smoothly without dead air.
Worked example: respond when an arrangement fails
Original practice example, not a released exam task or an assessed model.
You agreed to meet a friend at a café at 14.00, but your bus is delayed. Say what happened, estimate your arrival and suggest what your friend can do while waiting.
Hei, bussini on myöhässä, joten en ehdi kahdeksi. Luulen, että olen kahvilassa noin varttia yli kaksi. Voitko odottaa sisällä? Tilaa vain kahvi valmiiksi. Ilmoitan, jos matka kestää vielä kauemmin.English meaning
Hi, my bus is late, so I will not make it by two. I think I will be at the café around quarter past two. Can you wait inside? Go ahead and order a coffee. I will let you know if the journey takes even longer.
Try it: Say your own response aloud before reading the model again. Did you explain the delay, give a new arrival time and offer a practical suggestion?
Worked answer and explanation
The model covers all three parts: the bus is late, arrival is estimated at 14.15, and the friend can wait inside and order a coffee. It also promises an update if the delay grows.
‘Joten’ links the delay to its consequence. ‘Luulen’ and ‘noin’ make clear that the new arrival time is an estimate. The response helps the other person decide what to do; listing facts about public transport would not resolve this particular situation.
Next attempt: Record a second response with a different cause and a different time. Listen back for a clear request and understandable times. If you forget a word, describe the situation another way and continue. This self-check is about communication, not an official proficiency grade.
Frequently asked questions
Do I speak to a human examiner or a computer?
The format depends on the level. Intermediate Finnish uses recorded prompts in a language laboratory. Basic Finnish speaking is assessed through an interview, and the advanced test includes an interview as well as laboratory tasks. Check the instructions for your booked test.
What happens if I stay silent during a speaking prompt?
Extended silence prevents the evaluator from assessing your spoken proficiency. Always attempt to say something relevant to the topic, even if simple.
Is accent or pronunciation penalized?
No, having a foreign accent is completely normal and not penalized. As long as your pronunciation is clear enough to be understood without misunderstanding, you can achieve a passing grade.
How can I practise speaking at home?
Use the speaking practice tool above to record responses to our practice prompts, listen for whether you answered each part, and try again with clearer wording. These are study exercises, not released exam questions or an official assessment.
