What you will learn
- Separate a finished past story from experience viewed from now.
- Build perfect and negative past forms.
- Use the pluperfect when an earlier past event matters.
Choose the time viewpoint before the ending
Use the imperfect, also called the simple past in learner materials, to narrate events from a past time: eilen kävin kirjastossa. Use the perfect to look back from now, often presenting experience, a current result or a situation that began earlier and still continues. The distinction is a viewpoint, not a universal translation rule for English tenses.
A finished time expression such as viime vuonna usually supports past narration. Vuodesta 2022 can introduce an ongoing situation viewed from now: olen asunut täällä vuodesta 2022. Do not choose a tense from a single keyword without considering whether the situation is continuing.
Asuin Turussa vuonna 2022.I lived in Turku in 2022.
The sentence locates the situation in a past period.
Olen asunut Turussa vuodesta 2022.I have lived in Turku since 2022.
The situation is presented as continuing up to now.
Learn past forms with a few reliable verbs
The imperfect often contains an i, but stems and vowels change. Puhun becomes puhuin, ostan becomes ostin and menen becomes menin. Learn useful verbs in small sets instead of adding -i mechanically to the dictionary form. The verb olla has its own past forms: olin, olit, oli, olimme, olitte, olivat.
The perfect combines a present form of olla with a past participle. The participle agrees in number in these active personal forms: olen käynyt, olemme käyneet. The pluperfect uses past olla with the same participle: olin käynyt, olimme käyneet.
| Time perspective | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Present | käyn | käymme |
| Imperfect | kävin | kävimme |
| Perfect | olen käynyt | olemme käyneet |
| Pluperfect | olin käynyt | olimme käyneet |
Olen käynyt kirjastossa. Olemme käyneet kirjastossa.I have visited the library. We have visited the library.
The participle changes from singular käynyt to plural käyneet.
Olin ostanut lipun ennen matkaa.I had bought the ticket before the journey.
Past olla places the purchase before another past reference point.
Keep negative past and negative perfect apart
The ordinary active negative imperfect uses a present negative verb plus the past participle: en käynyt, emme käyneet. It does not use en kävin. The negative perfect includes ole: en ole käynyt, emme ole käyneet. The difference between those two sentences is still the time viewpoint.
For a missed appointment yesterday, en käynyt explains a past event. For whether you have ever visited a service, en ole käynyt reports experience up to now. Practice the whole negative phrase, including whether ole is present, so the learner task is more than remembering a participle ending.
En käynyt kurssilla eilen.I did not attend the course yesterday.
Negative past narration uses en plus käynyt.
En ole käynyt uudessa kirjastossa.I have not visited the new library.
Ole is part of the negative perfect.
Use the pluperfect only when it clarifies the sequence
If two past actions are already in chronological order, a series of imperfect verbs is often enough: ostin lipun ja nousin bussiin. The pluperfect becomes useful when you look backwards from a later past event: kun saavuin asemalle, juna oli jo lähtenyt.
In a short written account, first establish the day or situation, then tell what happened and what resulted. Add the perfect only when you deliberately return to the present viewpoint. Consistent time perspective helps the reader follow your story more than inserting every tense you know.
Kun saavuin asemalle, juna oli jo lähtenyt. When I arrived at the station, the train had already left.
Leaving came before arrival, so the earlier action uses oli lähtenyt.
Kadotin avaimeni eilen. Olen jo tilannut uuden avaimen.I lost my key yesterday. I have already ordered a new key.
The second sentence brings the story back to the current situation.
Mistakes and corrections
Before: En kävin kurssilla.
After: En käynyt kurssilla.
The negative imperfect uses the participle, not the affirmative imperfect.
Before: Olemme käynyt kirjastossa.
After: Olemme käyneet kirjastossa.
With a plural subject, this active perfect needs the plural participle.
Everyday dialogue
- A
Oletko käynyt uudessa kirjastossa?
Have you visited the new library?
- B
Olen. Kävin siellä eilen.
Yes. I went there yesterday.
- A
Lainasitko jotain?
Did you borrow anything?
- B
Lainasin kirjan, jota opettaja oli suositellut.
I borrowed a book that the teacher had recommended.
The conversation moves from experience now (oletko käynyt), to a specific past visit (kävin eilen), to a recommendation made before that visit (oli suositellut). Each tense has a reason.

Explained answer guide
Try the questions before opening the explanations. Each alternative is explained so you can identify the pattern you need to revisit.
1. Eilen ___ kirjastossa. Narrate a specific visit using käydä.
Answer: kävin
- käyn: This is present tense; the requested narration is in the past.
- kävin: Kävin is the imperfect of käydä for a specific past visit.
- käynyt: Käynyt is a participle and cannot stand alone as this affirmative finite verb.
2. Me olemme ___ täällä ennenkin.
Answer: käyneet
- käynyt: The participle needs the plural form with me.
- kävimme: Do not combine olemme with an imperfect finite verb.
- käyneet: Olemme käyneet is the plural active perfect.
3. Correct: En ostin lippua eilen.
Answer: En ostanut lippua eilen.
- En ostanut lippua eilen.: Negative imperfect uses en with the past participle ostanut.
- En ostan lippua eilen.: Ostan cannot follow en in this construction.
- En ostin lipun eilen.: The verb remains incorrect, and the negative object should be lippua.
4. Kun saavuin, juna oli jo lähtenyt. Which happened first?
Answer: The train's departure.
- My arrival.: Oli lähtenyt places departure before the arrival.
- The train's departure.: The pluperfect marks the departure as earlier than the past arrival.
- The sentence says they must be simultaneous.: Jo and the pluperfect explicitly support an earlier departure.
Use it yourself

Compare a model response and its grammar
English translation
Yesterday I arrived at the station too late. The train had already left. I bought a new ticket and waited for the next train. I have now checked tomorrow's timetable.
Why these forms work
- Saavuin establishes the past story.
- Oli lähtenyt describes the earlier departure.
- Ostin and odotin continue the past narration.
- Olen tarkistanut describes an action relevant to the present situation.
For speaking practice, cover the model and explain the same situation aloud with your own details. Continue with writing practice or speaking practice, which have their own guest preview limits.
Check the pattern in a new situation
Pick a viewpoint for each part of the message. The imperfect narrates a past situation. The perfect looks back from now. The pluperfect looks back from another past point. An understandable sequence matters more than using every tense in one text.
A useful decision sequence
- Use a past time to anchor the story: eilen, viime viikolla or viime vuonna.
- Use the perfect when reporting experience or a result relevant now: olen löytänyt.
- Check both parts of compound tenses and the participle's number: olemme löytäneet.
Etsin avaimia eilen, mutta en löytänyt niitä.I looked for the keys yesterday, but I did not find them.
The imperfect and its negative describe yesterday's search.
Olen nyt löytänyt avaimet.I have now found the keys.
The perfect reports a result relevant to the current situation.
One more situation to try
Tell someone that you missed a bus yesterday because it had already left. Finish by saying that you have checked today's timetable.
See an example and the reasoning
Myöhästyin bussista eilen. Bussi oli jo lähtenyt, kun saavuin pysäkille. Olen tarkistanut tämän päivän aikataulun.
I missed the bus yesterday. The bus had already left when I arrived at the stop. I have checked today's timetable.
How the grammar supports the message
Myöhästyin and saavuin belong to the past story. Oli lähtenyt places departure before arrival. Olen tarkistanut returns to the present viewpoint and tells the listener what has been done about the current plan.
