How to practise for the YKI reading test

The YKI reading subtest (tekstin ymmärtäminen) measures how well you understand written Finnish in everyday and work situations. You read short authentic texts such as notices, emails, news snippets, instructions, and advertisements, then answer multiple choice and short answer questions about them. The texts get longer and the vocabulary more abstract as the level rises from basic (perustaso, A2) through intermediate (keskitaso, B1 to B2) to advanced (ylin taso, C1 to C2).

The practice bank above mirrors that structure. Every session is shuffled, every question is checked instantly, and when you are signed in your scores and weaker topics are saved so you can come back to exactly the areas that need work.

What the reading subtest actually asks of you

On test day you are not asked to translate anything. You are asked to locate information, infer meaning from context, and recognise the writer's intent. That means the skill being tested is reading strategy as much as vocabulary. You skim for the gist, scan for a specific detail, and read closely only where the question demands it.

Time pressure is real. Intermediate candidates typically have under a minute per question once reading time is included, so the goal of practice is not only to be correct but to be correct quickly without reading the whole passage over and over.

Getting the most from this reading practice

Start at the level your level test suggested, not the level you wish you were at. Accuracy above roughly 80% is the signal to move up, and below 60% is the signal to drop down and rebuild confidence first.

Use the Finnish first display deliberately. Read the question and options in Finnish before revealing any English help, and only check the translation when you are genuinely stuck. That keeps practice close to real exam conditions where no English appears.

After each session, look at which topics produced mistakes. Reading questions here are tagged by theme such as daily life, housing, work, health, society, and services, and repeating the weakest theme is far more efficient than practising at random.

Frequently asked questions

How is the YKI reading test scored?

Reading is one of four YKI subtests and is graded on the exam's six point scale within your chosen test level. There is no negative marking, so you should always answer every question even if you have to guess.

What reading level do I need for Finnish citizenship?

Most citizenship and permanent residency applicants take the intermediate (keskitaso) test and need at least level 3, which corresponds to CEFR B1. Always confirm the current requirement on the official OPH and Migri pages before you register.

Is this YKI reading practice free?

Yes. All reading practice on YKI Test Prep is free to use without an account. Signing in is optional and only adds saved progress, streaks, and weak topic tracking across your devices.

How long should I practise reading each day?

Short, regular sessions beat occasional long ones. Two or three focused sets of ten questions a day, reviewing every mistake, builds reading speed and topic vocabulary faster than a single weekly marathon.
