Registering for the YKI test requires fast fingers on Opintopolku and a clear understanding of the costs involved. In 2026, the Finnish National Agency for Education introduced several major administrative changes.
Before you commit to a test date, you must understand the updated pricing structure and the incredibly strict new rules regarding test cancellations. Here is everything you need to know about your financial commitment.
How Much Does the Full YKI Test Cost?
If you are aiming for Finnish citizenship, you will need to register for the intermediate level (Keskitaso) exam. The intermediate test fee is €190.
Pricing for the New Subtest Pilot
As part of a new initiative for 2026, test-takers will eventually have the option to take specific subtests instead of the full exam. If you choose this route, you will pay per section. Subtest fees: Writing is €70, Listening Comprehension is €43, and taking both is €113.
The Strictest 2026 Update: No Rescheduling
The most important administrative update to be aware of involves changes to the YKI tests on 1 January 2026. Starting January 1, 2026, registrations for YKI tests can no longer be rescheduled.
In the past, you could sometimes contact the test center to move your test to a future date if a conflict arose. This is no longer possible. Your registration is completely binding. If you realize you have a vacation booked on your test date, you will lose your spot and your money.
How to Get a Refund (If You Get Sick)
Because you cannot reschedule, the only way to recover your €190 is to apply for a refund directly from the Finnish National Agency for Education.
The conditions for test fee refund being simplified. If you cannot participate in a YKI test that you have registered for, you may apply for a refund of the test fee from the Finnish National Agency for Education. The Finnish National Agency for Education will refund your test fee if your application meets all the conditions laid down by law.
Action Plan for Test Day:
- Double-check your calendar before paying.
- Ensure your passport or official EU identity card is valid, as driver's licenses and residence permit cards are not accepted as official IDs.
- If you wake up sick on exam day, immediately seek medical attention to secure a doctor's certificate.
