The "Filler Word" Trick: What to Say When You Go Blank

Going blank during the YKI speaking test? Learn the best Finnish filler words (tuota noin, siis) to keep talking, sound natural, and save your score.

It is the scariest moment of the YKI test: you are sitting in the language lab, wearing your headset. The examiner's voice finishes a prompt, the machine beeps, and it is your turn to speak. Suddenly, your mind goes completely blank. You forget the word for "appointment" and panic sets in.

The worst thing you can do in this situation is sit in silence. Examiners cannot grade silence! They want to see how you handle real-life communication breakdowns. The secret to surviving these moments is using Finnish filler words.

What Are Filler Words?

Filler words do not carry much dictionary meaning, but they do a very important job: they buy you a few seconds to think while still making you sound fluent. Native speakers use them constantly to avoid awkward pauses. Here are the most useful ones to memorize for exam day.

1. "Tuota noin..." (Well... / Let's see...)

This is the king of all Finnish filler words. If a prompt asks you a difficult question and you need two seconds to formulate your answer, do not stay quiet. Stretch out a nice, long "Tuooooota noiin..."

  • Example: "Mitä teet yleensä viikonloppuna?" (What do you usually do on the weekend?)
  • Your response: "Tuota noin... minä aion rentoutua ja käydä kävelyllä." (Well... I plan to relax and go for a walk.)

2. "Siis..." (So... / I mean...)

This is your ultimate correction tool. If you make a grammar mistake while speaking, do not panic. Use siis to correct yourself smoothly. It shows the examiner you recognize your mistake and know how to fix it, which actually earns you points!

  • Example: "Minä menen eilen... siis, minä menin eilen kauppaan." (I go yesterday... I mean, I went to the store yesterday.)

3. "Katsotaanpa..." (Let's see...)

This is a great phrase to use when you are asked an opinion question or need to solve a problem in the speaking test, such as planning a schedule.

  • Example: "Katsotaanpa... sopiiko tiistai kello kolme?" (Let's see... does Tuesday at three o'clock work?)

4. "Niinku..." (Like...)

Just like in English, Finns say "like" constantly in casual speech. It is highly informal, so you should not use it in the writing test, but in the speaking lab, it is a great way to keep your rhythm going if you stumble.

  • Example: "Se on, niinku, todella tärkeä asia minulle." (It is, like, a really important thing to me.)

Why Examiners Love Filler Words

The YKI Keskitaso (Intermediate) test assesses your ability to function in Finnish society. In the real world, people hesitate, forget words, and correct themselves. By using words like tuota and siis, you prove that you have a practical grasp of spoken Finnish. Memorize two or three of these words and use them as your safety net!
