7 Common Mistakes to Avoid on the YKI Test

Preparing for the YKI test? Learn the 7 most common mistakes students make in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and how you can avoid them to pass

Taking the YKI test (Yleiset kielitutkinnot) is a big step, whether your goal is Finnish citizenship or a new job. It is completely normal to feel nervous! Because of those nerves, many students make the same simple mistakes on exam day.

The good news? If you know what these mistakes are, you can easily avoid them. Here are the 7 most common YKI test mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Freezing in the Speaking Test

The speaking test happens in a language lab, and you only have a short time to answer. Many people make a small grammar mistake, panic, and stop talking completely.

How to avoid it: The examiners care about communication, not perfection. If you make a mistake, do not stay quiet! Keep talking, use a filler word like "tuota noin" (well), and finish your thought. A flawed answer gets many more points than a silent one.

2. Getting Stuck on One Unknown Word

During the reading section, you will absolutely see words you do not recognize. A very common mistake is reading the same difficult sentence over and over again, wasting valuable time.

How to avoid it: Skip the word! Read the whole paragraph instead. Most of the time, you can guess what the text means by looking at the context. Do not let one single word ruin your rhythm.

3. Translating Directly from Your Native Language

When taking the writing test, many students think of a complex sentence in English or their mother tongue, and try to translate it directly into Finnish. This often leads to messy, confusing sentences that the grader cannot understand.

How to avoid it: Think in simple Finnish first. Use short, clear sentences. It is much better to write a simple, correct sentence than a long, complicated sentence full of errors.

4. Not Reading the Listening Questions First

In the listening test, the audio starts fast. If you just sit and wait for the voice to start speaking before you look at the paper, you will fall behind quickly.

How to avoid it: Use the silent time before the audio plays to quickly read the questions and the multiple-choice answers. If you know what the question is asking, your brain will automatically listen for the right information.

5. Using the Wrong Tone (Formal vs. Informal)

In both the speaking and writing tests, you will be asked to communicate in different situations. Writing a message to your best friend is very different from writing a complaint to a housing manager.

How to avoid it: Always check who you are talking to. If it is a friend, use informal words like "Hei" and "Moi". If it is a company or official, use formal greetings like "Hyvä asiakaspalvelu" and polite verb forms.

6. Leaving Answers Blank

Sometimes, you just do not know the answer to a multiple-choice question or a true/false statement. Some students leave the paper blank because they are afraid of being wrong.

How to avoid it: You do not lose points for wrong answers on the YKI test! If you have no idea, always guess. You might get lucky, but a blank answer is a guaranteed zero.

7. Poor Time Management

The reading and writing sections give you 55 minutes each. Many test-takers spend 30 minutes on the very first text, leaving almost no time for the rest of the exam.

How to avoid it: Keep an eye on the clock in the room. If a question or a writing task is taking too long, move on to the next one. You can always come back to it at the end if you have extra time.
